craftykarendesigns: Magnolia Lane Gift Bags

Hi Everyone,

I'm still on a mission to get rid of some more dsp and I know that you are probably the same. It makes us feel better about buying new stuff if we get rid of some of the old ha ha. So I thought I would share this tutorial again in case any of you wanted to make some gift bags to keep in your stash for when you need them, these all fold flat for easy storage.

Todays project is a fold flat gift bag measuring 5 1/2" x 7 1/2" and 3" deep which will hold lots of treats, cosmetics, stationery, perfume, aftershave, all sorts of gifts for any sort of occasion. You can dress it up for a special occasion, leave it plain, whatever suites the occasion.

Update

Several people have asked me to make a smaller bag so I am now including the measurements for the smaller size in bold. All instructions remain the same, just alter the measurements. I have replaced the picture at the top with one of the two sizes of bags. Have fun crafting!!

Materials (larger bag)

2 x pieces of designer series paper 9" x 10"

Scoreboard

Double sided tape

Bone folder

Small hole punch

Ribbon (2 x 18")

Scraps of dsp and card stock to match for the tag (2 pieces 2" x 4")

Tag topper punch

Detailed trio punch

Measurements (smaller bag)

2 x pieces of designer series paper 7" x 8", all scoring measurements are in brackets below following the measurements given for the larger bag.

Instructions

Front - score on the 9" (7") at 1/2" (1/2") and 3 1/2" (2 1/2").

Then line up a ruler at the 6" (5") mark on the left of the scoreboard and score at 2" (1 1/2") down to the ruler at the 6" (5") mark.

Rotate 90 degrees and score at 2 1/2" (2") all the way down, then from the 4" (3") point down to meet the score you made at 2" (1 1/2") down to the 6" (5") (see picture), it sounds way more complicated than it actually is.

Score the diagonal lines from the intersection of the 2 lines above as shown in the picture.

Back - score on the 9" (7") side at 1/2" (1/2") and 3 1/2" (2 1/2").

Then line up the ruler at the at the 6" (5") mark on the left of the scoreboard and score at 2" (1 1/2") down to the ruler at the 6" (5") mark.

Rotate 90 degrees and score at 2 1/2" (2") all the way down.

Then turn 180 degrees and score at 6" (5") across to meet the intersecting line which you scored at 2" (1 1/2") (see picture).

Fold and burnish all the score lines. Cut tabs as shown in the picture and then apply double sided tape.

Remove all the backing and adhere the two sheets together to form a box shape. Remove the backing from the tape on the tabs and adhere these tabs to the back section of the bottom of the bag. Then adhere the front section over the top of that to complete the bag.

Puch in at the sides with your fingers and press the sections together then place doen on the table and press the bottom section flat against the bag forming the fold.

Using a small hole punch, punch two holes at the top of the bag on the front and back to feed the ribbon through.

Make a tag using a 2" x 4" strip of dsp and white card stock, put each piece in the tag topper punch and then round the bottom corners with the detailed trio punch. Adhere them together at the top so that they are slightly offset. Attach the tag to the ribbon handle.

I hope that you like this project and will give it a try. You could decorate them in any way that you like, I'm leaving mine fairly plain because I want to sell them at my craft fairs so want them to be useful for all sorts of occasions.
