Share it on a Sunday - Flip Top Chocolate Box - How to design a custom sized box

Hi Everyone,

Today for Share it on a Sunday with my crafty friends, it was my turn to choose the theme, so I've gone for 'make a box, any box'.  I needed a box for some chocolates to give to a friend as part of a swap, so I thought I would kill two birds with one stone.  The rest of my swap was using gingham papers in lots of colours and this one is no exception.  I designed the box myself, its easy to do, you just have to measure carefully the thing that you want to put in it and I will show you how.

I had some heart chocolates that I wanted to gift that had been in a bag and I decided to make a box to fit 12 of them.

Line up the chocolates or whatever you are gifting and measure the length of them and the depth and the height.

My chocolates measured 6 1/2" x 1 1/2" x 1/2" and I wanted to have two layers so my card needs to be

6 1/2" + 1" + 1" = 8 1/2" (length of chocs + 1" either end for the side of the box

then

1" + 1 1/2" + 1" + 1 1/2" + 1" = 6" (this wraps around the chocs, so 1" for front, 1 1/2" for the top, 1" for the back, 1 1/2" for the bottom and 1" for the front

Therefore I need a piece of card measuring 8 1/2" x 6"

Materials

1 piece of grapefruit grove card stock 8 1/2" x 6"
1 piece of dsp 6 1/4" x 1 1/4" (I needed to use gingham which only comes in 6 x 6 so my piece is a little smaller)
1 piece of ribbon approx 15" - it needs to wrap around the box and overlap by about 1" (I've used the terracotta tile linen ribbon to co-ordinate)
Scraps of whisper white and grapefruit grove for the sentiment
Delightful Day stamp set
Terracotta Tile ink
Multipurpose adhesive
Dimensionals
Paper snips
Trimmer
Simply Scored
Bone folder
Everyday label punch
Red line tape

Instructions

On the long side score the card at 1" and 7 1/2" and on the short side, score at 1", 2 1/2", 3 1/2", 5" and then fold and burnish all the score lines.

Cut up the score lines as in the picture to make the tabs and notch the sides of each of them.

Adhere the front two and then the middle two tabs to make the base of the box (see picture).

Then adhere the final two to the top to make the lid (see picture).

Cut diagonally across the sides of the lid (see picture), the lid folds over the bottom of the box to close and should be a good fit.

Add dsp to the lid and then wrap the ribbon around the box and overlap the two ends and secure with red line tape.

Stamp a sentiment on a scrap of whisper white and punch out with the everyday label punch.  Then punch out two half labels from the grapefruit grove scrap and adhere top and bottom of the whisper white label to frame it.  Add dimensionals to the bag and fix to the top of the box.

If you want the box to be reusable, tie the ribbon in a bow and add the sentiment on a tag.

I hope that you found the measuring instructions easy to follow and will have a go yourself.
