Butterfly Concertina Card

Hi everyone,

I just love making these concertina cards and they are great for all occasions.  The one I am going to show you today is a birthday one for a friend and features two of my favourites, gingham designer series paper and butterflies.  I hope that you will like it and give it a try. I first saw this demonstrated by Sam Clayton from Mixed Up Craft, a very talented lady whose work I just love.

Materials

To make a 4 1/2" square card:

2 pieces of thick card stock for the box, 1 x 7 1/2" square for the base and 1 x 7 9/16 square for the lid
1 x 4" x 8"
3 x 4" x 8 1/2"
10 x 3 3/4" square coloured card or foil for the mats
10 x 3 1/2" square dsp
1 x 4 1/4" square coloured card or foil for the top of the box
1 x 4" square dsp for the top of the box
2 x 4 1/4" square pieces of dsp for inside the lid and the base
Scraps for sentiments and decorations
Inks to match
Butterfly Gala stamp set
Butterfly duet punch
Well Written dies
Die cutting machine
Multipurpose adhesive
1" circle punch

Instructions

Score the box base and lid at 1 1/2" on all 4 sides, fold and burnish the score lines and make tabs at each corner (see picture).

Adhere the tabs to make up the box and then put to one side to dry.

Adhere the mat and dsp layer to the top of the box.

Adhere the layer of dsp inside the box lid and base as centrally as possible, leaving a small border all the way around the edge. Punch a half circle  on the edge of two sides of the lid for thumb grips to make the box easier to open.

Score the 4 x 8 card in the middle at 4 and then flip and score on the other side, this will help with the folding as it's a concertina.

Score the 4 x 8 1/2 pieces at 4 and 8 and again score on both sides. add glue to the 1/2 strips along the end of each piece and adhere them together into a long strip (see picture).

Adhere all the mats and layers together and decorate as required, then glue them in place along the strip of card (see picture). Don't use too many layers and dimensions in your decoration, don't forget that this all folds together.

Put glue on the back of the two end panels and carefully fit them to the centre of the inside of the lid and the base so that the whole thing is continuous (like a concertina, hence the name).

Decorate the lid (I've used a die from my personal stash) and add a panel to the back of the box to write your message if required.

I hope that you like my card and that you will give it a try.

Happy crafting,

Karen XX
